                                                       A scream out for Change

Have you ever heard of TANF and What it is used for? Temporary Assistance for Needy Families is a program that began in the 1997 for families who are struggling to survive on their own. They say the program mostly focus on 3 big topics the world needs better development at. First, help families in need in care for their own children. Second, get single mother and families off Welfare quickly, especially through paid work. Finally, encourage more marriage which would help stop the teen pregnancy. Many years has passed and teen pregnancy has increased. Food stamps have been limited. Even the wealthiest person in the world can still be struggling. Learning to survive on their own can be a challenge for some people. The system of Welfare isn’t as fair as they say it is. Food stamps should be provided for everyone. Even if they are unemployed, Welfare checks doesn’t help the single mothers pay their bills. Welfare has decrease some of the levels of benefits because it allows the government and the taxpayers to save a lot more money.

If a person makes 25,000 or more a year, he or she is not eligible for benefits. Social Welfare has been shown that helps the needy people of our society. For example, there is a mean test where people submit information into a system to see if they are eligible or not. Professor Beresford states the system really should be harassing those it should be helping. “Time must be called on the constant reruns of divisive and self-serving attacks on welfare and the devalued groups it serves” (Beresford, 2009). In other words, Professor Beresford believes that the system should really focus on the people who has the most serious issues other than just helping the needy people. He wants them to try to aim for the people who come from very harsh backgrounds which are the people who really are not financial stable. “The argument for shifting from universal to targeted means-tested benefits and services has long been that it focuses resources more efficiently and meets the needs of those who really need help, rather than wasting them on people who should be able to manage on their own” (Beresford, 2009). If the government believes the higher income can survive on their own, then they should send out surveys to see if the people are really doing well on their own. They don’t know the struggle of a person who makes a higher income because their attention is focused on the young and the poor. Everyone in the world struggles but the people who are in charge doesn’t really know because they don’t take the time to see where the society is at. The system needs to be re-informed to a way where it helps everyone in such need. But being poor is a personal decision to the people; the government shouldn’t be telling the people what to do with their lives. They shouldn’t be saying this certain person should be able to handle situations on their own. Life can be a struggle for everyone a person who has a higher income should be allowed to not all but certain benefits. Food stamps should be provided for everyone. It is never a day where a mother can’t provide a decent meal for her child because all her money went towards rent. Food stamps should be a safety net for anyone.

The argument against food stamps are well known. Food stamps has been known to keep the people of our society from being in poverty or hungry. Over the pass 10 years + food stamps have increased over time. But food stamps isn’t for everybody it’s usually a personal decision on who gets what; the government should allow everyone to at least have a certain amount of money for food stamps. “Currently, SNAP’s funding comes completely from the federal government, encouraging states to enroll as many people as possible” (Montgmery 2013). If this is something that the government wants than why select a few people to have food stamps? Why not all? Out of all the people checks the people are paying taxes , which is barley enough to survive on. If the government can take out taxes from their checks than the people should be able to have some government assistance with the help to feeding their kids when needed. The higher the people income the more taxes they take out from checks and the more taxes they take out the less money they have left over from paying bills. “This change allows individuals to stay on food stamps with less incentive to improve their economic situation, draining taxpayers and discouraging self-reliance” (Montgmery, 2013). People who makes more than an average person still needs government assistance. There are some people who just isn’t ready to live the world on their own. It can be hard for them to have to save money in order to get what they need. The governemt should get more invlolve with the people, they should really focus on the areas where everyone struggles. The person who makes more can geniuly lose it all because it only takes one simple mistake to be made. Helping the people to survive on its on can be really tough on a lot of people. A little support shouldn’t be that hard to receive from the federal government. Food stamps should be provided for everyone and not just for the poor. Rich people can be starvng as well as an average person. The welfarm system needs to be rebuilt because everyone has a personal need the government just don’t care for what the people needs.

The arguments against Welfare are well known. Welfare has been shown to be unfair to certain people. Child support, food stamps, healthcare, money assistance and the biggest one cutting Welfare rolls. If Welfare was created to make all happy, if the government were taking taxes out of our checks than they should at least provide the person with a check that will help them fill that hole the person is stuck in. “Meanwhile, the nation’s 3.7 million welfare families confront an urgent problem: they do not get enough money from welfare to pay their bills” (Jencks,2000). Even if they are receiving a Welfare check doesn’t mean it’s something that person can really depend of it. Most mothers have to lie and cheat their way through the system in order to receive a decent check that can help her and her children to survive. But lying and cheating can come with a lot of consequences with the government. “But low benefits have another, more sinister effect that neither conservatives nor liberals like to acknowledge: they force most welfare recipients to lie and cheat in order to survive” (Jencks,2000). Lying to the system can give that specific person jail time because if they put it like this, its stealing from the government. Taking advantage of what they are trying to really building for the society who really needs help. It’s always important to turn in what you work every 6 months to a year. “Yet if they report that they are working, the welfare department will soon reduce their checks by almost the full amount of their earnings, leaving them as desperate as before” (Jencks,2000). Reporting you work doesn’t never mean an end to receiving a Welfare check. “The only way most welfare recipients can keep their families together is to combine work and welfare” (Jencks,2000). If the government really understand the problem of the society from the inside than he or she would feel guilty to what the system is doing to the people. There are answers out there to the questions of so many the government just got to do a better job at finding the right evidence to get the correct answer to the solutions. Being govern it can be hard to know what happening on the inside but that

doesn’t mean that can’t use single mothers as a source, the feedback might just be the key to a better system for the FUTURE.

It is often argued that Welfare program has not reduce the life of poverty. Welfare needs a bit of remodeling the system. But means test is not completely inaccurate. If the government cut back some of the money than the world would not go into bankruptcy. The people should appreciate what the government is trying to accomplish. The changes the government is making will allow a lot more opportunity and save the world lots of money. “Able-bodied welfare recipients should be required to work or prepare for work as a condition of receiving aid” (Smith,2010). In order for single mother to receive the benefit that have to at least submit into the system that they 30 hrs. or more. “Granting welfare to able-bodied adults creates a potential moral hazard because it can lead to an increase in the behaviors that generate the need for aid in the first place” (smith,2010). The people who are the strongest and knows how to survive should be asking for loans and not grants. However, making a person get a loan can also lead that person in a really big debt. Therefore, if the government make these changes it can cause a lot of problems for the people and as well the government.

In concluding, the federal government job is to provide government assistance for the people in need. The government doesn’t see the world how we see it from our point of view. And when I say he doesn’t see in our point of view is he doesn’t see how the people they don’t provide for the people who doesn’t receive government assistance. Food stamps are something everyone should have because there might be a day a parent can’t provide food for their children. It is always good to be a part of the society because there are a lot of situations nobody never knows about until you actually go out and do your digging of finding information. The social work field takes hard dedication to be in this field. They even have to give up all your time in the world just so you can help out the people in need. Teen pregnancy is a choice for young girls. The system needs to have a due over because everything is changing in this society. We need an upgrade on everything, we can’t always keep it the same.

A Future Social Worker

My role as a student was to pick a career that interest you so I have chosen the career path of becoming a Social Worker. There are many different types of fields in the Social Work Program which are job, family, and school. Also there is medical and health care, mental health and substance abuse, military, community, and social work administrator. The social work field I have chosen is the child welfare. Social Welfare is a group of assistance programs designed to help the needy citizens. This is important to me because I was once in those child’s positions and I just want the better for the new generations yet to come. Welfare comes with a lot of benefits to help out many people as possible. Some of the main points I would be focusing on are what social workers do? How do Social Workers balance their work and personal life? What type of clients do Social Workers find the most difficult to work with and why? What are your opinions on the current welfare system? Should home schooling become a child welfare case? . How important is paper work in the social work field? Why are social workers so low on staff? Where do you see social work in 5 years? What type of clients do Social Workers find the most difficult to work with and why? What is social workers theoretical orientation regarding family therapy?

people solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives. Clinical social workers also diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues” (Gov Dept. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistic. United States: 2019). Social Workers are the key for new beginnings to families and or any other people in need. How do Social Workers balance their work and personal life? I don’t even think a personal life would even exist to a Social Worker because all their time is mostly spent with clients. “The majority of social workers works full time. They sometimes work evenings, weekends, and holidays to see clients or attend meetings, and they may be on call” (Gov Dept. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistic. United States: 2019). Social Workers have a duty and responsibilities to the people of our community. The people have to know they can really trust them, even if some cases takes late nights. What type of clients do Social Workers find the most difficult to work with and why? It’s not about how difficult they are to you but how you as a social worker can manage their stress levels with them. Social Workers can find it difficult to work with angry clients. Angry clients aren’t always fun to work with because you can’t predict what might happen next. But with a difficult situation like that the best way would to be finding ways the client can focus on the good. Letting go of that high level stress and bringing it to a level that is much better to work with. Finally, also trying to approach them in various ways to see and learn what method works best. They have to be able to change for the better become a new person, change their life style living. A mother fear is getting her children token away out of her home and placed in the system.

opinions on the current welfare system? I believe that social workers shouldn’t immediate place a child with a foster family. The children are already suffering from trauma, so the very best would be to ease their minds knowing they are safe with someone they’ve known their entire life. “When children cannot remain with their birth parents, the comfort of a grandparent or an aunt eases the trauma of separation” (Child Welfare 2016). Children who are placed with family members save the government a lot more money than placing them in a foster home. Do you believe some children are safe inside a foster home? No I truly do not believe because some foster homes can be very cruel. System needs more controlling. “Children do best in families, so systems need to invest in finding and supporting foster families and relatives who can care for them” (Child Welfare 2016). The Child Welfare system can be a little tricky but that doesn’t mean you can’t beat the system. Child Welfare is a field if you like dealing with children. All of your cases will mainly focus on children. These specific children have been beaten, sexually, physically abuse and much more. These children are very fragile really be needing the time and care. Dealing with this field it might be a little hard at times but you have to keep your strength through it all. The children are depending on you because their lives are in your hands now once you’ve started the case. Social Welfare needs more people in this field because the less people the more paper work that has to be done.

Social Work paper work can be a little problematic. Paper work isn’t easy on a social work because once you’re done with your 1st pile you still have many more coming your work. How important is paper

work in the social work field? It takes a lot of time and effort with filing this paper work. Social Workers get a lot of their information from research. Research can be very useful for Social Workers because they have to make sure everything they write down is accurate. “Papers had to report empirical research or be reviews of relevant research” (McFadden, Campbell, Taylor (2015) p. 1546). Social workers are not allowed to submit any paper work unless they have evidence to back it up. False evidence does not look good on your record. Why are social workers so low on staff? A lot of the paper work can really wash the social workers away not wanting to work in this field no more. The less staff they have the more work that will you’re your way. “focused on the evaluation of research findings, which considered individual and Organisational factors associated with resilience or burnout in child protection social work staff” (McFadden, Campbell, Taylor (2015) p. 1546). If you are a social worker in this field than there is no reason for you to back out even if it can be hard. You just have to remind yourself why you really chosen this field. Social workers are doing to better the people, better the community and of course better themselves. Children have suffered enough its really time to make a difference in the Social Work Field.

                                      Understanding “Inventing the University”

Being a teacher can be a little challenging, it’s not just about your tone of voice or how you present yourself. Teachers should be able to teach students at all levels; it doesn’t matter what subject you are introducing. In order to do that professors, have to understand the meaning of teaching professionalism. Dr. Bartholomae journal “Inventing the University” focuses on how the teachers should better themselves as an instructor so their students can better themselves as a writer. A teacher is the one who has all the power; they’re the ones who control what happens inside the classroom. Which means they shouldn’t pretend to be ones sitting on the opposite side being the apprentice. Teachers have the ability to gain research and figure out what is another reason for students to come from basic writers to excellent writers. A writer should write as if they are the readers trying to comprehend the writers’ story. A writer must connect with the reader’s expectations. The goal for teachers is to help students comprehend the main points of writing a paper. Every student falls into a different category of writing. Students are placed in different classroom levels based on their writing skills. Teachers scrutinize students writing so they should be more precise and helpful with the feedback for the student’s papers. Teachers should step out of their comfort zone by finding a way to help basic writers to improve.  

1. Purpose/Audience 

Reading the article, Bartholomae “Inventing the University” focuses on how basic writers should connect with the readers before moving onto another argument dispute. This article is giving facts and information to teachers about how they should establish a student to be the insider instead of the outsider. Bartholomae has clarify students must follow traditional forms and genres as if they are a part of that centered area of rule (17). The narrator in the article educate teachers about how students should “speak the language of the university.” In order for this change students, teachers must allow students to draw their own conclusions. Leading students to believe that they are responsible for something new or original, unless they understand what those words mean with regard to writing, is a dangerous and counterproductive practice (Bartholomae 10). According to the author, teachers are the ones who should be able to help prep students in writing papers. 

B. Content Analysis

It sometimes can be very hard for students to take control when writing papers. On page 7, Bartholomae argues that teachers “get neither a technical discussion nor an “academic” discussion but a Lesson on Life”. The ambition that teachers would like to see from students is to be more pedagogy being able to write to the readers as if they don’t have any clue of the subject. According to the author, students have to learn to adapt to the audience with creativity. (Bartholomae). I admit that teachers should start allowing their students to write more often to increase their writing skills. Schools focus on students taking multiple-choice tests rather than preparing them for a qualify writing class in college. The more students

write the more they will get the hang of writing to a specific audience while speaking the language of the university. It constitutes his authority as a writer and not just as a musician (that is, as someone with a story to tell) (Bartholomae 13). In the essay with the jazz music he writes as if its his own instead of being the musician playing the role. 

C. Organization, language, and style – diction, word choice, jargon

In the beginning, reading the article it was a little hard of understanding. Continually reading it over and over you notice the article starts with a thesis then the back up evidence that allows us to see if the thesis is very true about it. Finally, there is a conclusion to sum up the information. This article is also known as a scholarly article which the vocabulary is very hard to comprehend. Once you organize the article and really break down vocabulary to where you can understand it the article all comes together to what the author purpose is saying.    

D. Evidence – logos, pathos, ethos

“Inventing the University” is an article that states a topic to convince an audience by logic or reason. Throughout the article, Dr. Bartholomae uses a lot of college student’s essays as evidence to back up his purpose. Choosing many different types of essays shows the difference between a struggling student and a tremendous writer. “This is a failure of teachers and curriculum designers who, even if they speak of writing as a mode of learning, all often represent writing as a “tool” to be used by a (hopefully) educated mind” (Bartholomae 11). You will notice that he brings up a lot of teachers should better themselves as an educator. I feel that the evidence that is provided inside the article is very

acceptable. Another reason this evidence is very acceptable because it allows us to understand what the author is expressing.

E. Overall (close) Assessment

A writer should be able to write as if they are playing the role of the discourse community. On page 13, Bartholomae argues that “Anyone who improvises “knows” that improvisation follows rules and guidelines”. Creativity is a very strong term used in the English field. The writer of the jazz paper, you will notice the student doesn’t write as if she’s the musician. According to the author, students have to try to learn to write the action of meaning something for the commonplace to stand by itself (Bartholomae). I felt very astonished when reading this article. I didn’t know there was a key to writing papers. Bartholomae argues that students have to “speak in the voice and through the codes of those of us with power and wisdom”, which means they must be to put themselves in a position to where they’re the teachers.

III. Conclusion

The connection between me and “Inventing the University” is I am one of the writers who doesn’t write as if I am playing the part. Me being a university student I don’t try as a college student because my work is still a high school level. Inventing the University is not just about you reading any old article. Its about showing students to write as speaking the language of the discourse. By reading this article I think I should write more as a student to improve my writing skills. I also can apply “inventing the University” to my course work by allowing myself to be the educator ready to inform to other.
